Flipping Out S7E4 ”Back Flipping” by BB
The Employee of the Week gets the money in the swear jar Jeff has started. Every time Jeff cusses, he has to pay $20. Zoila says she will never get the money because she isn’t a good employee. By the end of the week, the swear jar contains $300 (Jeff cussed a lot). Zoila wins it as employee of the week for working so hard at the paint show. Zoila says she wants to cry and says she is blessed to be working with the family. Andrew doesn’t seem happy about it. He did sweat it out in that paint can suit and worked the crowd hard at the show.
Jeff is really frustrated waiting around for all his redesign clients. His clients in Pacific Palisades have a budget of $600,000. There is no way Hania can keep changing the floor plan and stay within budget. Jeff and his staff really don’t like the mini cat doors she wants installed. She also wants a slide from the top of her garage into the pool. Jeff and Jenni think she’s kidding when she brings up some of her suggestions. Jeff is not into tacky, he’s into tasteful. Hopefully he can reel Hania in. All the changes in floor plans are delaying this redesign.
Later Hania decides to demo the old pool and install a new one, plus she wants to add an outside fireplace. Jeff wonders if she’s clueless about what things costs. Jeff tells her it’s his duty to inform her if she’s going way over budget. When he tries to talk to her, she tells him she doesn’t want to hear it.
Jeff later meets with Hania’s husband Amir to discuss the budget. Jeff promises to work with them to keep them within budget, but he only has so much control. Ultimately Hania and Amir are in control. Amir tells Hania they need to have a discussion. Jeff explains to Amir how he keeps tabs of money and Amir tells Jeff he will also be keeping tabs. Jeff goes to check on the progress at the Pacific Palisades house, which has been demolished. Hania and Scott the contractor tell Jeff Hania wants to change from Spanish style to Modern style. Jeff tells her she can’t change the style of the house without asking the homeowner’s association. Hania tells Jeff she was hoping he would take care of it. Jeff tells Hania she needs to just tear the house down and start over. Jeff thinks if he doesn’t get a handle on it, Hania is going to ruin his reputation. Jeff tells Hania she bought a 1930’s Spanish style house and it is what it is. Jeff is about to blow a fuse and thought he was on candid camera or being punk’d.
This is the weekend of the paint show where Andrew and his sidekick will be dressed in paint cans. Jenni hopes she doesn’t go into labor during the show. Her ankles are so swollen, you can’t even tell they are ankles. Jeff seems disappointed the staff isn’t prepared for the show. He wants them to know everything about the paint line so they can answer questions accurately. Jeff thought his booth looked pretty good for not having a big budget like the other vendors. The two living paint cans go around acting silly and scaring people. Zoila works hard handing out pamphlets. Nick, the vice president of Dunn-Edwards shows up and Jeff is nervous about the roaming paint cans. Nick points out the logo on the pamphlet is not the right color. Gage goes to look for the paint can guys so Nick can see them. They come back from taking a break. When Nick sees them, he approves, not overwhelmingly, and says they are a little funky. The paint cans were really a hit with all the people at the show.
Jeff is so frustrated with the slow pace his clients are moving on their projects, he decides he wants to get back in to flipping his own properties. He tells Gage to look for an apartment and asks his sister in law about how much they can get if they sell Gramercy. He tells Gage to get used to moving once a year because that’s probably what they’ll be doing for the rest of their lives. Gage loves Gramercy and doesn’t want to move. He want’s Jeff to concentrate on his paint line and his clients. Jeff is determined to sell Gramercy.
Jeff desperately wants to be involved the current real estate boon. He drives up to Montecito to look at a beach house for sale. It needs a lot of work but the houses in that enclave sell for big bucks. Gage keeps bringing up negative things about the house and Jeff agrees in the end it’s not the bargain he thought it was. But Jeff is definitely back in the market for flipping. Hania has frustrated Jeff so badly, Jeff announces that the outdoor kitchen for Gramercy is going to be finished immediately so it can be sold. He wants to reduce his client list, buy three spec houses, and get back into flipping. He puts the whole staff on notice about what’s most important, and that’s selling Gramercy.
I enjoyed this episode because it was more about Jeff’s business than all the personality quirks and conflicts between the staff members.
Southern Charm S1E4 “Is She Or Isn’t She”
Is Kathryn pregnant? Who’s the daddy? We left off with Kathryn telling Ravenal that she’s now concerned about pregnancy, since they didn’t use any protection. The two leave Jenna’s party & go to a restaurant. Ravenal wants to go to a drugstore & get a pregnancy test. At least he’s taking responsibility for the potential situation. Kathryn, on the other hand, doesn’t want to know tonight. She just wants to drink & hang out with Ravenal. I’m not saying that it’s not scary & that she doesn’t have cause for concern, but I think she just likes the drama & attention. She’s pissed that Ravenal didn’t call her for a month, but says that all she & Shep had was a fling. Umm, isn’t that what you & Ravenal had?
After a make-out session, Ravenal goes in to get a pregnancy test & they go to his house to take it. Again, no true, aristocratic southern girl would put all of this on TV. The test has an error so they decide to see a doctor. It’s nice to see Ravenal step up & tell Kathryn that he would care for the child, but I’m still not convinced of her motives.
Chuck Bass & Patricia are going to a benefit for the Gibbes Museum. Patricia wants to sign him up for a board, but he doesn’t seem interested. Patricia’s background is in art (double master’s) & she helps private collectors gather works. I love this lady more every episode! The museum has raised $7.1 million, which is pretty impressive. Patricia says that she didn’t send Whitney to Oxford & the Sorbonne so that he could bus tables. She’s still anti-restaurant, but Whitney is dead-set on it. She would prefer him to a film-maker or something else in the arts. Whitney thinks that he can bring a different, more rock & roll culture to Charleston with his restaurant. Patricia points out that Charleston may not be ready for that.
Kathryn has spent another night at Ravenal’s. In the light of day, she seems more responsible. She wants to go home & shower before going to the doctor. Ravenal offers to go with her & then walks down to Shep’s house. He wakes Shep up with the news that Kathryn might be pregnant. Ravenal thinks that Shep could be the father. She hasn’t discussed this with Shep yet, but they used protection so he probably isn’t the father. Still, Ravenal wants a pregnancy test if Kathryn is pregnant.
Kathryn arrives at Lewisfield Plantation (in Moncks Corner, SC, which is about 45 min north of Charleston) in the same dress she had on last night. Classy. She knocks on the door, so this obviously isn’t her house. We learn that it’s her grandmother’s home. She tells her grandmother that she & Thomas Ravenal (from a big-name family) kind of like each other & had a fling. That seems to be a very optimistic interpretation of what actually happened. She really likes him. She tells her grandmother that she’s going to the doctor to get a final answer on pregnancy. Her grandmother tells her that she has to accept it if she is & that she’ll have to change her life.
Shep needs a tux, but wants an outrageous one. How does he not have a tux yet? Cameran is there to steer him in the right direction. She advises him that JD would not be happy if Shep wore a colored tux to his Carolina Day party. She likes the classic black pants & white jacket. She’s also never heard of Carolina Day. Doing my due diligence, I googled it & learned that Carolina Day celebrates the American victory over the British at the Battle of Sullivan’s Island on June 28, 1776. Shep has no lack of self-confidence. He tells Cameran that he can get any woman. Umm, not this one! Shep then tells Cameran about the pregnancy scare. Way to spread gossip like a schoolgirl Shep. Cameran is repulsed by the idea of sleeping with a 50-year-old. Shep thinks its tawdry, which is ironic coming from him.
Jenna is putting away dishes when Chuck Bass arrives. He wants to apologize for his assistant’s behavior. Last episode Brandi questioned where Jenna’s money came from. Whitney lets Jenna know that “word on the street” is that she suddenly has lots of money. She says that she everyone wants to better themselves, why shouldn’t she enjoy having nice things. Ultimately he doesn’t care who pays her rent, but he doesn’t want her to be gossiped about. Then the word gold-digger comes out, just what I’ve been waiting for! Jenna finally mentions her rich boyfriend, but says that it’s not about the money & that she could have married him years ago. Lou lives in NY & he’s very successful. She’s 28 & he’s 55. I agree with Jenna that there’s a double-standard – men are encouraged to date young women while women are gold-diggers if they date older men. She says that she’ll say yes when he proposed. In a later clip, she mentions that Charleston men just aren’t worldly enough for her.
Shep is beginning to realize that his decisions (doing whatever he wants) may not be the best idea. He could see himself with MJ & he may have jeopardized that. They meet for coffee. Well, he orders wine, then she orders coffee, so he switches to coffee. She is going to teach yoga so she doesn’t want wine. He tells her that he likes her hair when it’s natural & curly. Way to lay on the charm. He then wants to make concrete plans to hang out. She says that her social calendar is full. Poor guy! He is upset that MJ is never available & worries that she’s heard about his reputation. I think he’s just used to getting everything he wants.
Ravenal is at Whitney’s, spreading the word of Kathryn’s scare. Ravenal seems skeptical. He points out that Ravenal seems to court trouble & is a little self-destructive. He advises Ravenal to let Kathryn go on her way if she isn’t pregnant. Dating young girls isn’t good for Ravenal’s image, but he’s never considered how it could affect his political aspirations.
Jenna & Cameran are discussing clothes for the Carolina Day party. Everything Jenna pulls out of her closet is black & edgy. Cameran spreads the gossip – Kathryn might be pregnant with Ravenal’s baby. Jenna didn’t realize that the two were hooking up. They think that it’s fake & that Kathryn is trying to trap Ravenal for his money & name.
Shep feels like he dodged a bullet & wants to now make some changes. He invites Craig over to hit golf balls. He doesn’t want to bring up Kathryn because he’s ok with Craig again. They discuss MJ, who is a total catch. Craig tells him that MJ has a long-term boyfriend from Ohio. He saw the two of them at lunch, so they are still together. Shep is confused that he could lose to someone from Ohio. Craig points out that most girls would choose someone with a job & ambition. Craig gets a little enjoyment out of checking Shep’s ego. I love it! Shep is 33? What?!? He acts like he’s 16!
Off to the doctor! We learn that Kathryn’s grandmother married an older politician at age 21. Looks like Kathryn wants to follow in her footsteps. Kathryn tells him that she will still be interested in him, even if she isn’t present. The doctor comes in & tells her that she isn’t pregnant. They are both relieved! The two go for drinks to celebrate. Ravenal feels like they’ve become closer through this ordeal. He finds her vulnerable & wants to take care of her. He’s 29 years older, but she has an old soul. She tells him that her family doesn’t judge him for his past. Ravenal admits that he didn’t give her a chance before, but that he has now opened up to her. He invites her to Carolina Day as his girlfriend. Could be true love!
Happy Birthday Boobah
