Flipping Out S7E5 “Due Date” by BB
There’s lots of baby talk about what happens during delivery, who’s doing what if Jenni goes into labor at work, and all that, but here’s what happened with regard to Jenni’s pregnancy. She worked for Jeff past her due date, including riding around in Jesse, the painter’s, un-air conditioned truck. Jenni wrote an article about her labor, delivery, and being a new mom exclusively for Hollywoodlife.com. In it, she said she was watching Shark Tank and eating pepperoni pizza when she went into labor. She got an epidural and it was wonderful for a while until she had to back down to push. It’s a nice article if you want to read more. She also listed some of her exclusive mommy confessions. My favorite confession was she plays her children’s rap album “Old School Kids Beats” for Alianna on a loop. I’ll bet Jenni is a wonderful and fun mom. Jeff is probably a great “uncle” to all his friends’ and relatives’ kids.
Jeff is still looking for a potential flip, but really needs the equity from the sale of Gramercy to get back into that business. He wants two houses, one to live in and one that’s a heavy fixer. There’s not much out there according to his sister in law realtor. Jeff has to have control of his projects and that’s not the case with his current clients.
The Gosselaars, Mark-Paul (Zach from Saved by the Bell) and his pregnant wife Cat, are redoing their Hollywood Hills house and Jeff is helping them pick out furniture and accessories.
He is taking their house from bland to the next level. Mark-Paul and Cat need to take some risks and step outside of their comfort zone. The interior is repainted while they are away in Hawaii. The end result is really nice. I especially like the nursery. They seem happy with what Jeff has done.
Lisa, Jeff’s client from last year, now wants to get the exterior of her house done. Her husband Gary, catches Lisa, Jeff and Jenni talking about it, and he reminds her they hadn’t decided to start the project yet. Gary will be watching things very closely during Phase 2, including the budget. Jeff and Dan, the landscape architect, get into a discussion with Lisa about the budget for the exterior. Gary has left a list of what he wants done. He’s in Boston. Talking about money makes Lisa crazy. Jeff comes up with a budget of $75,000. She says she will not pay a cent over $50,000. This is a perfect reason for Jeff wanting to go back to flipping, so he can have control over things. The bid for painting the exterior of the house is over $30,000. Lisa wants it done for half of that price. She suggests that Jeff and Jenni do the painting themselves (after Jenni has the baby). Jeff gets one of his mediocre painters, Jesse, to do a bid on painting the house. Jesse agrees to do the job for $10,000. Have Lisa and Gary never heard the saying “You get what you pay for?”
Southern Charm S1E5 “White Ties & White Lies”
We’re back! I’m very surprised that I’ve stayed with this show for five whole episodes now! Last time, we learned that Kathryn isn’t pregnant with TRav or Shep’s baby, but she did manage to get back into TRav’s life. We also learned that Jenna does, in fact, have a wealthy boyfriend. And Patricia is still my favorite character. FYI – for anyone who wants a true dose of Southern life, this year marks the 25th anniversary of Steel Magnolias, still one of my favorite movies of all time! Now, on to the show:
We begin in TRav’s kitchen. He & Kathryn are discussing attire for JD’s party. TRav is going to buy her a new dress. As an aspiring model, she must love all of this airtime. I have to wonder if TRav is using her for her political connections – her middle initial, “C”, is for Calhoun, as in the 7th VP of the US, whom she is a descendant of. Kathryn is worried what people will say at an upcoming event. TRav assures her that he isn’t worried & that he likes that she doesn’t care what people think. He sees lots of potential in Kathyrn, especially after the pregnancy scare.
Cameran meets up with Whitney at a wine/cigar bar. She thinks that Whitney is secretly in love with assistant Brandi. Cameran isn’t sure why else Whitney would have hired her. She points out that Whitney needs to settle down & start having babies. He could join the yacht club & Brandi could join the junior league. As stereotypical as that sounds, it’s probably an accurate description of Southern society couples. The real reason for the meeting comes out – Cameran wants to be Whitney’s realtor. He’s looking to buy a house & move out of his mother’s. Whitney says that living with Patricia is a little like Norman Bates. Cameran doesn’t know who that is. Oh dear. She’s already found a $7 million house for him.
JD is at his barber shop/spa, planning the Carolina Day party. He’s very specific about what he wants. TRav arrives to get primped for the party. He has purchased a white dinner jacket for the event. JD asks about Kathyrn. TRav again says that Kathyrn has all of the qualities that he looks for. Didn’t he say that about her before their one-night stand, and then dump her afterward because of her age? Anyway, TRav is bringing her to the party & JD approves.
Shep wants an explanation from MJ because she was hanging out with her ex. How hypocritical – he’s pissed that she saw another guy, while he was sleeping with Kathryn. MJ arrives at Shep’s & he immediately brings up the ex. She admits that she hangs out with her ex, but doesn’t seem to understand why it’s a problem. I don’t either – she & Shep were not exclusive. He’s way too upset about this. She doesn’t seem to be very into Shep, which must bruise his poor little ego. Oh, Shep, telling a girl that you usually have your hands all over someone after 2 dates isn’t the way to win this girl over. I think that he’s just pissed that she isn’t falling all over herself for him. Welcome to the real world Shep.
Patricia, Whitney & TRav are having lunch. It’s time for Patricia’s “medicine,” aka gin. Patricia immediately launches into questioning TRav about Kathryn. TRav raves about all of Kathryn’s good qualities. Did anyone else notice that the first quality was her family connections? Patricia recalls first meeting Kathryn, at 9 am in her kitchen. Hmm, did Kathryn also hook up with Whitney? Patricia tells TRav that she shouldn’t be cavorting with 21-year old college girls & that he needs a major woman. TRav defends Kathryn, saying that she has much poise as any woman. Whitney says that she plays like she’s 12 & that TRav needs to cut it out. He sure isn’t mincing words. Patricia suggests that, “instead of impregnating 21-year olds, you might want to refocus.” Love her! She reminds me of some of the older women in my life – have a cocktail, speak your mind, don’t worry about offending people.
TRav meets Kathryn for a drink. He tells her about the conversation with Patricia. Kathryn isn’t surprised that they are judging her. She believes that she is just as smart as Whitney & that it’s BS to think that she will harm his political career. As she begins explaining her relationship with Whitney, it becomes obvious that she was a make-over project for him. TRav is suspicious, but Kathryn tells him that she didn’t hook up with Whitney. She says that he did try to hook up with her, which makes TRav angry. Why would he be mad at Whitney for trying when Shep actually succeeded? TRav explains that it’s because Whitney has been judging his relationship with Kathryn.
Patricia is lounging outside with Whitney. Her butler/servant/assistant brings drinks to them. They discuss the restaurant idea. Shep hasn’t stepped up to the plate as he said he would. Are we really surprised that Shep has shirked responsibility? Patricia thinks the whole thing is unfocused. She wants to set up a meeting with Bryan, the founder of Planet Hollywood. He seems like a much better source of advice than Shep. Bryan’s involvement would also allow Whitney to spend time on his films.
It’s Carolina Day! Too bad that it’s pouring. Everyone is getting ready. JD is going over the details with the staff. I like that he’s so hands on & that he wants to have everything planned ahead of time so he can enjoy the party. Kathryn & TRav are still pissed off at Whitney. TRav is tired of his judgments. Based on Patricia’s comments regarding the pedestrian-ness of food service, I can see where Whitney gets his judgmental character. Whitney is dressing with the help of Robert, Patricia’s chef. It’s very Downton Abbey. Jenna is wearing a harem pant jumpsuit thing. The crotch hanging down to her ankles is not flattering. At all. The men look good. I love a man in a tux.
JD is waiting near the door to greet his guests. Shep arrives first with a not-MJ blonde. Whitney tells Shep about his mother’s conversation with TRav. These boys sure do like to gossip. Danni arrives, but Shep wants to play the field after MJ. Craig is wearing a dark suit, while the rest of the men are in white dinner jackets. Whitney comments on his “inappropriate” dress, but makes no comment on the fact that the women are in gowns while Jenna is in a jumpsuit. TRav & Kathryn arrive. I really like her dress. The blue-green color looks great with her coloring. Craig wonders why TRav is being so open about his much younger woman. I thought that it was typical for the men to date younger girls? Craig thinks that Kathryn has a hidden agenda & doesn’t really like TRav.
Whitney & Jenna are mocking TRav & Kathryn. Um, Jenna, I wouldn’t be mocking Kathryn’s dress considering you look like you belong at an Arabian Nights party instead of Carolina Day. Kathryn is playing it cool, pretending that she doesn’t hear the gossip. We’re treated to a short scene in which Whitney is begging Jenna to see her tits. Such classy behavior from the etiquette king.
The group makes its way to dinner. Whitney, TRav, Kathryn, JD, his wife, & some randoms are at a table. Shep, Jenna, Cameran, & others are at a table. Whitney tells Kathryn that she looks like Rita Hayworth, but Kathryn doesn’t know who that is. Whitney makes a snarky comment that Kathryn should know who that is. Kathryn responds with “but I’m a child, right?” I’m glad that Kathryn isn’t backing down from Whitney’s elitism. Shep is flirting his way through his table. Obviously he’s heartbroken about MJ. Their table is steadily gossiping about TRav, Kathryn, & the pregnancy scare.
TRav wants to have a dinner party & give advice to the young guys like Shep. Whitney finds the idea of TRav giving life advice absurd. I find the idea of Whitney, who lives with his mother in an elitism bubble, absurd. Whitney agrees to come if TRav can find 4 or more guests. TRav blows up, telling Whitney to go away & threatening to slap him. Ok, Whitney was being a jerk to his supposed friend, but TRav overreacted. The ladies leave the table to gossip in the bathroom. Whitney’s date explains that people don’t always get Whitney’s sense of humor. Back at the table, Whitney denies trying to hook up with Kathryn. TRav believes Kathryn. When she returns to the table, TRav tells her that Whitney has been denying that he invited Kathryn over. Kathryn says that Whitney invited her over to talk politics, but denies that he hit on her. Uh oh. TRav is annoyed that Kathryn changed her story, but thinks it’s because she wants to diffuse the situation.
Despite saying earlier that he didn’t want to go back to Danni & arriving with another girl, Shep drunkenly corners Danni for a make-out session. Classy. And he wonders why MJ didn’t take him seriously? Whitney asks Kathryn to make it very clear to TRav that he didn’t hit on her. TRav returns. He’s had time to reflect & now he wants Whitney to “step outside” with him. Very mature for a 50-something year old man. JD tries to diffuse, then asks them to please keep their fight in private. Whitney again denies hitting on Trav’s “lady,” even though TRav wasn’t with her at the time of the alleged attempted hook up. TRav threatens to put Whitney on the asphalt & Whitney threatens to call the police. TRav finally expresses what he’s really mad about – the comments about his party. Whitney apologizes for that. TRav decides to let it go for now.
